Effective Date: June 14, 2026
This policy applies only to the free, donation-supported edition of Naptime ("Naptime Free"). If you use the paid edition of Naptime, that app collects and transmits no data and is covered by our standard Privacy Policy instead.
Naptime Free is offered to you at no cost. In exchange, you agree to contribute anonymous data about how you sleep, which we are free to use as described below. This is the trade that keeps the free edition free. This policy explains, in plain terms, exactly what we collect, how we keep it anonymous, what we do with it, and how you can take it all back at any time.
When you first open Naptime Free, you are shown a screen explaining what the app collects, that the data is anonymous, and that it may be shared with research partners and other third parties. Agreeing to these data-donation terms is required to use the free edition — no data is uploaded until you have agreed, but the free edition cannot be used without agreeing. If you prefer not to share your data, you can use the paid edition of Naptime instead, which keeps all session data on your device and uploads nothing.
Using Naptime Free with data contribution enabled constitutes your agreement that we may collect, store, analyze, and otherwise exploit the anonymized data described in this policy without restriction and without further compensation to you, for as long as it remains in our systems.
When you complete a nap or an overnight sleep session and have consented, the app uploads a summary of that session. This includes:
To keep the app reliable, we upload technical records of crashes and abnormal process exits (e.g. the reason the app was terminated, memory usage at the time, and whether a session was active). These contain no personal content from your sessions beyond the device metadata listed above.
Naptime Free is designed so that the data we receive cannot be traced back to you as an individual:
The combination of these measures means the dataset we hold is anonymous: it describes how sleep happens, not who slept.
In exchange for providing Naptime Free at no charge, you grant us a worldwide, royalty-free, perpetual, and irrevocable right to use the anonymized and aggregated data we collect for any lawful purpose. This expressly includes, without limitation:
Because the data is anonymous, "your" contribution becomes part of a pooled dataset that we are free to exploit as described. This right survives your deletion of the app, except with respect to data you retract under Section 6 before it has been irretrievably aggregated.
Uploaded data is transmitted over an encrypted (HTTPS) connection and stored on servers we operate. Each upload is cryptographically signed to ensure it genuinely came from the Naptime app and was not tampered with in transit.
Our servers are hosted in European data centres operated by Hetzner Online GmbH, which acts as our hosting provider. Hetzner stores the data on our behalf but has no independent right to use it. Because the data we collect is anonymous and we retain unrestricted rights over it, no further data processors need to be named for the purposes of using this data.
Even though the data is anonymous, you remain fully in control and can withdraw it at any time. You have two independent ways to do this:
Using "Delete my data" is also how you stop future contributions: it clears your consent, so the app stops uploading and will ask for your consent again before any further data is contributed. Note that data which has already been irreversibly aggregated or anonymized into a pooled dataset before your retraction may no longer be separable, and to that extent cannot be individually withdrawn.
If you would like assistance retracting your data, contact us using the details below.
We do not sell or share information that identifies you, because we never collect any. We may freely share, license, or sell the anonymized and aggregated data as described in Section 4.
Naptime Free is not directed to children under the age of digital consent in their jurisdiction. We do not knowingly collect data from such children. Because we collect no identifying information, we cannot determine a user's age; if you believe a child has used the app, you may retract the associated data as described in Section 6.
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the effective date above.
